(Fashion on Films) The Paris Dress

23 May

Grace Kelly floating on chiffon in Hitchcock’s Rear Window is a scene that’s impressed on my memory. The Paris Dress (that’s how it’s called) might be the most famous frock Grace ever wore. It was designed by Edith Head and it seems to anticipate the Dior “Corolle line”, a foreshadow of the “Y” silhouette Dior presented for his collection in 1955.

Since I first saw that dress, I’ve been dreaming a fashion dream: a fitted black bodice with deep V cut down to the bust, cap sleeves and a full skirt, layered in chiffon and tulle. Can you picture that?

(Style on Film) Gilda

15 Jan

Do you know Gilda?

Google
Gilda was the bombshell in black satin dress played by Rita Hayworth in 1946. That film helped bring the femme fatale trend to cinema, establishing that a woman with curves can be sexy!

She knows how to take her gloves off, don’t she?

The Carrie Diaries

23 Mar

First official image of the new Carrie. Anna Sophia Robb will play young Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and The City prequel. It’s going to be hard to fill Carrie Bradshaw’s well-worn Manolos!

What it is about:  the lives (and wardrobes – yes, the clothes are like another character) of four best girl friends in their mid-thirties, living in NY.  Over 94 episodes and multiple continuing story lines, the show examined the lives of big-city professional women in the late 1990s/early 2000s and how changing roles and expectations for women affected the characters
Who: Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York (Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis)
Where: New York
When: 1998-2004 (the show); 2008 and 2010 (SACT1 and SACT2)
Why it is fashionable:  as soon you see the show opening credits and Carrie in her pink tutu, you understand there is something special. Rumors about $10 million dollars costume budget (for SATC2) should say it all. In just few words: it is a fashion fairy tale!
When watch it: every day
Who to watch it with: your best girl friends
Parental control : the quirky series tackled socially relevant issues such as sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex, and promiscuity
I couldn’t help but wonder… Carrie Bradshaw is Candance Bushnell’s alter ego. The show was based in part on her book, compiled from her column with the New York Observer. When she wrote the “Sex and the City” essays, she used her own name initially.

P.S This post is dedicated to Aliens, Vé and Julie, my Sex-and-The-City girls. I love you all!

>Style inspiration – Elvira’s red dress

24 May

>

Last week I wrote about Scarface and Elvira Hancock’s sexy sophistication. Then I went shopping and all I wanted was a red dress like Elvira’s.

I think it is no secret I love Fashion and Cinema. When those arts meet, I just get over excited.
I often look at movies as source for style inspiration. I am not looking for celebrities’ fashion. Most of the times, I just try to tap into the mind of the costume stylist to get that particular detail so much important to help come out the character’s personality.  And I have to confess I try to add it to my own wardrobe.

It is not easy because dressing up exactly like a movie character is not my intention. Even if I wanted, I probably couldn’t. It is hard to work a Hollywood look into my not-so-Hollywood life. Often, all I need is that mood, detail or concept.

Elvira is pure sophistication. She slept in slinky silk and wore everyday dresses we’d probably wear to prom. I opted for something simpler. Hers was a shinny, probably wrap dress with a plunging v-neck. Mine is easier to use. It is a waist-whittling, bust-enhancing red dress with a less deep v-neck and also front slit like hers. For a 80s look, I’d go  for heels, bangles and some pretty jewelry.

>Jenny and Blair’s outfit from Gossip Girl

21 May

>

images Miss Selfridge, Urban Outfitters, Dorothy Perkins

Let’s face the fact we can dress up as Jenny or Blair (Gossip Girl) and yet spare some money. Miss Selfridge launched a collection inspired in the characters, offering a non-expensive choice of clothes for all those ones looking to infuse a little preppy or rocker style into their wardrobes. The truth is we can save some cash and yet get pretty much the same look. I browsed on line stores and found alternatives.

Jenny look- Miss Selfridge proposal’s for Jenny is a lace prom dress for 49 GBP (1). You can create this rocker girl look with a  retro-style corset bra (2) from Urban Outfitters (13 GBP) and a mini skirt or, even better, choose a lace tired dress (3) from Dorothy Perkins for 28 GBP (actually you get 10 GBP off today)

Blair look – you can get a floral 2-in-1 dress from Miss Sefridge for 45 GBP (4) or just pair a white blouse with a floral culotte. I found one for 18 GBP at Urban Outfitters (5) but I am buying a blue rose (6) one at Dorothy Perkins for 12 GBP

>A little Gossip Girl style into your wardrobe

20 May

>

Would you like to add a little Gossip Girl style into your wardrobe?
Doing some more research on Gossip Girl clothes, I remembered Miss Selfridge  just launched a range of clothes inspired in the show.  I am doing my own styling and decided to post pictures of what I have found so far. My goal is to style a complete outfit inspired in each character by next week!

>Fashionable Movies – Scarface

17 May

>

 images google

Scarface, 1983 (A Força do Poder, El precio del poder)

What it is about: a young and determined Cuban immigrant takes over a drug empire while succumbing to greed
Who: Al Pacino was Tony Montana but the world still remember him as Scarface. Michelle Pfeiffer played Elvira Hancock
Where: Miami
When: 1980
Why it is fashionable: Cartel (not Mafia) look. Clothes with extreme indulgence in sensual pleasures. 80s sexy sophistication, huge coke-head sunglasses and shiny dresses
Gucci’s SS 2006 advertising campaign was based on Scarface’s look
When watch it: if you are going blonde (forget Blond Ambition. Elvira is just perfect). After watching Scarface (1932) by Hawks and Rosson
Who to watch it with:  not with your kids
Parental control: it is not a movie for children
Gossip: Brian de Palma gave up Flashdance over Scarface

>Fashionable Movies – American Gigolo

15 May

>

 images google

American Gigolo, 1980 (Gigolô Americano)

What it is about: a high-paid male escort who falls in love with the wife of a politician and is framed for the murder of one of his clients.
Who: Richard Gere as Julian Kaye and Lauren Hutton as Michelle

Where: Beverly Hills
When: 80s
Why it is fashionable: Armani! It is about being chic and wearing Armani.

When watch it: whenever you need to re-style your boyfriend `s wardrobe … and to convince yourself italians do it better (yes, Armani!)
Who to watch it with: definitely not with your boyfriend. There is something threatening (for him) about the idea that Richard Gere could be out there, just a phone call away from you, willing to having sex for money.
Parental control (better say, `boyfriend` control): if your bf will not leave the room,  better  skip Gere`s  full-frontal nude scene (you can always rewind it later!)
